Maquettes are three-dimensional character models, animators study in order to render their subjects more realistically in two dimensions.  Similar to model sheets, maquettes provide reference for all animators, in-betweeners and clean-up artists.  This enables them to render a specific character with consistency.

Maquettes are a work of sculptural art in and of themselves, capturing and preserving the fluid beauty of movement in time.
